After purchasing his German Frers 33 meter performance sloop, the owner came to the realization that the vessel’s use would be considerably enhanced with the addition of a cockpit hard top bimini. German Frers supplied the basic concept and initial structural design.
VGYD was contracted by the builder to take the original preliminary designs from Frers to the working and construction design stage. This involved alterations from the original composite layup schedule to achieve better strength to weight ratio, as well as engineering the substantial structural support and attachment systems required to secure the new structure to the vessel in an aesthetically pleasing manner.
The finished product has absolutely lived up to the owners’ expectations in enhancing the vessels usability while looking great, and after two Atlantic crossings plus two multi month owners cruises has shown no structural issues whatsoever.

When I hired Van Gorkom Yacht Design I asked you to correct the production boat’s tendency to float down by the bow. The new boat floats perfectly on her lines. Nailed it! I was floored. She’s also about four inches higher in the water, exactly as I expected to see. It’s a combination of your lighter, more efficient deep torpedo keel and my all-composite interior and structural grid. The stock Evelyn 32-2 boats are famously fast, but I think this updated version is going to drive the modern sport boaters crazy. Looks fast standing still, as my dad liked to say.

My IMX 40 is a great racer/cruiser, but we always have had controllability issues, particularly when the boat was powered up. That was until we replaced the rudder with a Van Gorkom blade. The difference was quite remarkable. We’re no longer rounding up on a heavy kite reach with everything sheeted on. The improvement on balance makes the boat super fun to sail.
